Still Running
by Sharon Tjaden-Glass
I didn’t intend to continue to run this long.
I thought I’d just run a few times to help me climb out of the rut of miscarriage. Maybe I would keep it up for two weeks. Maximum.
But, oh my God, I’m still running.
I don’t do it every day. I’ve found that running every day aggravates my left knee. So I run once per week. On the other days, I do my usual weightlifting, cardio kickboxing, or yoga.
I’ve noticed that now I’m looking on the sides of the road as I drive, scoping out decent, long stretches of sidewalk where it might be fun to run in the future.
I’m running longer stretches.
I’m not getting tired as easily.
And when I’m done… Oh… The feeling.
And a close second? Reviewing my heart rate charts.
I love seeing the peaks and valleys. Up and down. Over and over again.
I love seeing how far this heart and this body are carrying me. It’s one more reminder that, yes, I’m moving forward.
Yes, I can do this again.
Beautiful and inspiring. It makes me want to tie on a pair of running sneakers and see how my heart feels.

Do it! Even if you go for just 10 minutes. I support you, Dana! 🙂

Thank you! I remember you mentioning that the breathing would get easier–you were right!

Have you tried trail running? It might be easier in your knee.

Not yet. Sometimes, I have to go off the sidewalk when it ends, and I have noticed that it *does* feel better to run on bare earth–however, it’s also unpredictable. I almost rolled an ankle this weekend when I couldn’t see a dip in the ground, covered by grass. Do you run on trails? If you do, are you thinking a lot about things you could trip on?

Haha. No I’m not a runner. I’m a cyclist. Way easier on your knees. I know a lot of runners, though. Try forest park, Leif Erickson trail. Very predictable. A great place for an easy bike ride, too!

It’s like a moving meditation. Some days it’s easier and the flow just happens, some days it’s really hard! Keep running.
